For more than 70 years Longwood Quarries Ltd has been supplying screened agricultural lime and crushed aggregates to the farming, building and construction industries throughout Lincolnshire. During this time they have gained an excellent reputation for providing their customers with quality graded products and service. In the deepest part of the quarry there is a bed of very dense Lincolnshire limestone, which is affected by the rise of the water table in the winter months, and hence, has not been touched for over 20 years. It has now become apparent that this limestone will produce a high quality aggregate, and it has been decided by the current quarry manager; Mr Laurence Carmichael, to utilise this stone. An initial trial with rock breakers was carried out with limited success, but upon viewing the Maxbrio Vibro Ripper at the Hillhead Exhibition earlier this year, Mr Carmichael decided to hire one for a full evaluation. Initially a Maxbrio BR35 Vibro Ripper & a Hyundai 30 tonne excavator were supplied by EP Industries to take up the challenge of removing the dense Lincolnshire limestone. Laurence Carmichael said “The trial was very successful, the MaxBrio Vibro Ripper performed very well in the dense limestone bed where its productivity was double that of a breaker of similar size. We also used it to reduce the slope of a steep haul road to improve access to the quarry for our lorries and I can see the potential to use it at our other unit for the extraction of dimension stone” Due to the successful trial of this unit, Longwood Quarries Ltd has placed an order for the larger MaxBrio Vibro Ripper – the BR55 to suit their Hyundai R480LC-9A, which they took delivery of earlier this year. The combination of the MaxBrio BR55 and the Hyundai R480 will further increase the production of the quarry.
