| We’re proud to announce a major milestone for the Mecalac road rail range we supply: the 216MR excavator has now secured Network Rail Product Acceptance and RIS approval, officially clearing this specific model for operation across the National Rail infrastructure. This achievement marks a significant step forward for both our customers and the wider rail industry. With these approvals in place, the 216MR can now be deployed on track for maintenance, renewals, and infrastructure projects with full regulatory confidence. What This Means for the Industry Gaining NR Product Acceptance and RIS approval confirms that the 216MR meets the stringent safety, performance, and compliance standards required for use on the UK rail network. For operators and contractors, this delivers: |
- Greater operational flexibility — the approved machine can now be used across the National Rail network without additional certification hurdles
- Improved project efficiency — the 216MR’s compact, powerful, and highly mobile design excels in restricted rail environments
- Enhanced safety assurance — approval confirms the machine meets all relevant technical and operational requirements
Engineered for versatility, stability, and precision, the 216MR now stands as the approved option within Mecalac’s road rail lineup. Its newly certified status offers contractors a modern, efficient, and compliant plant solution for on-track operations.
We’re excited to support the rollout of the 216MR across the UK rail sector and look forward to seeing the benefits it brings to rail projects nationwide.

| The first time this Atlas 1604ZW came into us we upgraded it, giving the machine approximately 50% extra duties. QTS then asked us to make a special rhino horn with tilt cylinder to work with a drill rig. The EP rail team designed and manufactured the horn for the machine as per QTS's specifications before re-calibrating the Atlas to allow it to be used with the Rhino Horn and the drilling rig at an increased radius. Upon completion of the work QTS took delivery of the machine and attachment where they went to work on the QTS Severn Estuary Contract: www.linkedin.com/posts/qts%2E_rail-collaboration-ropeaccess-activity-7106996990474866688-vHdS?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop | ON TRACK STABILITY IS BEING TESTED & PERFECTED IN THIS SHORT VIDEO OF THE ATLAS MACHINE ON OUR TEST TRACK |
The Atlas RRV has had the following additions; additional undercarriage weights, 8 new correctly rated tyres, and a fall off protection ring on the upper part of the machine.
The GKD RCI system has been upgraded to issue 6 and, using our in-house state of the art testing facilities, has been calibrated and verified by performing tip testing, the machine has now regained its lifting capacity and duties which had previously been lost by up to 50%.
After lots of other modifications and repairs the machine was repainted and fitted with new stickers and decals to ensure it was looking as good as new, ready for collection.
All work carried out was in accordance to and compliant with RIS-1530-PLT issue 6.
